Japan and Russia agree to hold joint maritime drills

As one of the fruitful results of the first ever diplomatic defense talk between Japan and Russia, the two countries agreed to conduct joint maritime drills to combat terrorists and pirates.

The said diplomatic meeting was attended by Japan's Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera for Japan side. Russia had Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu.

The one day meeting was held at Japan government's guest house in Tokyo.

Aside from the joint maritime drills, the two countries also agree to initiate "Japan-Russia cyber-security talks".

Kishida told news reporters that the cooperation forged in the meeting is hoped to enhance the relationship between Russia and Japan.
