As good as it goes with its objective, the effort was criticized by wildlife advocates.

On the other hand, the Safari Club's executive director, Ben Carter came up to defend the closed-door event on Saturday. He said, the proceeds of the auction goes to the protection of the species and that the black rhino to be hunted is already old, male and non-breeding.

The selling of the rhino hunting permit drew critics from many animal protection groups. An official said, all black rhinos should be protected no matter how dangerous they may become.

One of the comments from the critics says:
This auction is telling the world that an American will pay anything to kill their species
Moreover, North American regional director of the Massachusetts-based IFAW, said:
This is, in fact, making a spectacle of killing an endangered species.
The auction of this kind goes for five permits per year. The first one made available on Saturday.

On the same day, about 40 protesters gathered around the venue where the black rhino hunting permit auction is to be held.
