Microsoft is bringing Bing Rewards, the program that sends users codes for gift cards and more in exchange for performing searches with the company’s Bing search engine, to smartphones. At least, it is to anyone who isn’t using the company’s own Windows Phone platform.
Microsoft announced the move in a post on its Bing Blog today. Starting today, users who sign into Bing through their smartphone or tablet’s browser will earn points for everything from searching for images, to making travel plans and more. Just like with Bing Rewards now, Bing Rewards for mobile devices will allow users to sign in with a Microsoft Account or Facebook account.
Once they’ve racked up a specific number of Bing search points users can redeem those points for dozens of rewards, Redeemable items on the Bing Rewards website include gift cards for ProFlowers, Amazon, Applebees, GameStop Fandango, Groupon, The Microsoft Store, Hulu Plus, Starbucks and Microsoft’s own app stores and entertainment platforms.
Unfortunately, iPhone and Android users will still have to head to the Bing Rewards website to redeem gift cards and such. Microsoft says that it does have plans to roll out Bing Rewards redemption to mobile users at some point in the future.
To be clear, it doesn’t look like Microsoft is adding Bing Rewards functionality to the Bing apps for either platform. Instead, Microsoft is simply adding the functionality to the mobile version of the Bing website. It’s because of this that Bing Rewards isn’t yet available on devices running Microsoft’s own Windows Phone platform.
Today Windows Phone users are forwarded directly to the platform’s native Bing app whenever they attempt to browse Bing.com through Internet Explorer. This means that Windows Phone users aren’t able to access the upgraded mobile website strictly speaking. Microsoft did confirm that it has plans to make Bing Rewards available to Windows Phone users, however it didn’t provide any guidance on exactly when users can expect it.
All told, Bing Rewards coming to mobile platforms sounds look a good thing for all those involved. Users who prefer Bing over Google search should be able to rack up Bing Rewards more quickly than if they’d only been able to earn points on their desktop or tablet – especially if they’re heavy smartphone users.
It also allows Microsoft to attract more mobile search traffic. As Microsoft is expanding the program, it’s likely that Microsoft found that users who participate in Bing Rewards are more likely to continue using the search engine.
