The Nokia Normandy is reportedly the first Nokia handset to run Android, and lately we’ve heard it will be called the Nokia X and is indeed still on track to be released in the near future.

This new handset may be the first Nokia running Android, but if the latest reports and leaks from the typically accurate @evleaks are right, it will only support the Nokia Store, and won’t have access to Google Play. And that’s only part of the bad news regarding this underwhelming extremely budget-minded smartphone.

NokiaX

We’ve seen countless reports and leaks suggesting Nokia’s Android aspirations are still a go, with Microsoft not in control of the newly acquired company quite yet. The leak this week confirms the device is still on track for a release, and even shares some of the underwhelming specs of the phone. If anything, Nokia’s aiming for a very low-end budget market, and is merely testing the Android waters.

According to evleaks the Nokia X will run Android 4.4 KitKat, as we’ve seen before, but be heavily skinned with Nokia’s own blend of Windows Phone and Android we’ve never seen before. The 4-inch display will be 480 x 800, something popular in 2010 with smartphones, and the dual-core 1.0 Ghz processor won’t even have 1GB a RAM. This phone may not be extremely fast or smooth, even if Android 4.4 KitKat is on board.

The report claims it will only have 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, a 5 megapixel camera for quick Facebook photos that will be average at best, and a small 1,500 mAh battery. Thankfully there’s a micro-SD slot for expanding storage, but that’s about the only plus to an otherwise extremely underwhelming budget smartphone.

It should launch with six color options, a dual-SIM variant based on region, and users will be getting apps and games through the Nokia Store, instead of Google’s own Google Play Store.

At this rate it doesn’t look like the Nokia X will be launched in the US, and if it does, it’ll likely be on prepaid carriers rather than the big three. For now an official announcement, release date, or price is all still up in the air, but it better arrive soon and for a low price if it has any chance at succeeding.
