Thanks to a leak, we know that AT&T is hard at work on the Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update, an update that remains unreleased but has been rumored to have a release date in February or March.

Samsung hasn’t announced anything just yet but it’s clear that a Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update is incoming at some point this year. French carrier SFR says that an update is scheduled for January or February while rumors point to a release next month or in March. Earlier this month, a rumor from SamMobile claimed that one version of the update had just hit testing and was not in shape for a public release. Point is, we’re getting closer but a release date isn’t set in stone.

Details do, however, continue to flow and today, thanks to XDA-Developers, the AT&T Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update has been confirmed thanks to a leak. AT&T itself hasn’t confirmed anything, no, but the fact that there is a leak suggests that AT&T is preparing the update for arrival, thus, confirming its existence.

The leak, from designgears, does not confirm a specific release date. The build appears to be an early one, from early January, so it’s probably not the version of Android 4.4 KitKat that will be released to the public. Those without the know how are advised to avoid the update, particularly because of a bug that prevents video playback. Those who are adept at installing official, but unofficial software, will still want to proceed with caution.

This is the first Android 4.4 KitKat leak for an American Galaxy S4 variant and it’s possible that it could be the last. Samsung usually keeps a tight lid on its US-bound Android updates so there is no telling when, of if, another update will emerge. Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon are also likely working with Samsung to deliver updates though those updates still haven’t emerged from hiding.

Rumors suggest that the international Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update will emerge sometime next month, or, in March. Samsung hasn’t confirmed a date, or the update itself, which means that these dates aren’t set in stone. Instead, users will likely have to wait for the update in silence, per usual.

U.S. Android update releases typically come a few weeks after international variants get their updates so it could be a little bit before AT&T, and the others, push out Android 4.4 KitKat. Still, the fact that the carrier is working on the update is good sign for AT&T owners and owners on other U.S. carriers.
