California egg law is making some rounds on the legality table as it is being contested by politicians.

On Tuesday, Missouri attorney general filed a lawsuit urging the federal court to slam a California law that seeks to regulate the living conditions of chickens - a law that is to take effect in the year 2015. The California egg law will prohibit eggs from being sold if they come from hens that were raised in cages not conforming to the prescribed new size and space requirements by the state.


Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster contends that the said law infringes on the interstate commerce protections of the U.S. Constitution, as it imposes new rules on the out-of-state farmers.

If California legislators are permitted to mandate the size of chicken coops on Missouri farms, they may just as easily demand that Missouri soybeans be harvested by hand or that Missouri corn be transported by solar-powered trucks

California's 'Humane Society', a group directed by Jennifer Fearing, stated that California has the right to safeguard the health and safety of its residents. Fearing said, eggs produced in 'battery cages' poses higher risk of salmonella contamination.

Although California voters approved of a ballot movement in 2008, requiring poultry be raised with enough spaces to allow animals to lay down, turn and move around, concerns raised include: California egg farmers might be standing on a disadvantaged competitive state against their counterparts in other states.

This is the same essence carried by the Missouri lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Fresno, Calif.

Meanwhile, California democrats who support California egg law declined to air their comments and reactions on Tuesday.

Coming from Missouri Farm Bureau President Blake Hurst, he said, the lawsuit is a significant legal challenge. The California egg law might be able to stir commotion among agricultural policies for all the states.
