One extremely important aspect of owning a smartphone, especially one running Android, is regarding how long the manufacture will support and issue updates for the handset.

With Google adding more and more excellent features and stunning designs to each release of the Android operating system, smartphone makers need to update all its handsets and deliver the latest features. This has been an increasing problem, just ask any LG owner, and today HTC made a huge change to curb this problem on all HTC handsets. Promising awesome support for all US flagship smartphones moving forward.

In fact, today during a Reddit AMA the team at HTC made a promise and commitment to update each flagship device (like the HTC One) with every major version of Android for two years after the initial product release. Meaning any smartphone that gets released, should be guaranteed to get the latest version of Android for at least two years.

“Given the immense resource requirements for updates we can’t solve all our past issues, but today we are making a commitment to support all new North America flagship devices going forward with all major Android updates for 2 years after their release date.”

HTC received some angry words earlier this year after cutting off the HTC One X from getting 4.3, or even 4.4 KitKat after only 18 months since being released, but today along with the new announcement also said they’re looking into delivering the latest KitKat to the One X. So that’s certainly good news for HTC One X owners, and many other fans that own an HTC smartphone.

The statement makes it sound like any major version of Android will arrive on a device if it’s under the 2-year mark, but hopefully they don’t just mean they’ll support devices for 2 years, rather they’ll support them with the latest version of Android for 2 years, as there’s a big difference.

The company has struggled in the past with quarterly losses, and could potentially not be around in 2 years, but with an impressive HTC One and a new HTC M8 successor coming soon we have a feeling HTC will get back on track soon enough. Either way, a promise of timely and latest software updates is certainly good news for all potential and current HTC owners.
