Japan snow storm kills 11, injures 1,200

Reports say, at least 11 died while more than a thousand were left injured as snow storm hit Tokyo and other areas.

As per record, the snow piled up to a width of about 27 centimeters (10.6 inches) - the heaviest fall in Japan's capital since 45 years ago.


The deaths recorded were mostly due to road crashes; Vehicles are prone to skidding brought about by the slippery roads.

Meanwhile, more than 20,000 households were without electricity on Sunday; More than 400 domestic flights were cancelled.

As the snow thickens in the heavily affected prefectures of Japan, more passengers are expected to get stranded in the airports and other transport hubs. The snow  storm is a threat to disrupt Japan's air, rail and road transport. (Image: www.straitstimes.com)
