Nokia has just made the process of choosing a Windows Phone on Verizon Wireless more difficult. After weeks of leaks and rumors Verizon and Nokia have formally announced that the Lumia Icon, the first flagship Windows Phone of the New Year, will launch on February 20th.

Verizon finally revealed that the Nokia Lumia Icon would be available to its users in a press release this afternoon, noting that users should expect the device to cost them $199.99 and a two-year contract. The announcement came one month after the device was fully detailed on Verizon’s website by accident. Rumors about the Lumia Icon or Lumia 929 as it was originally named began surfacing late last year.

It may have taken Verizon and Nokia some time to share details about it but that doesn’t mean that the Lumia Icon isn’t worth getting excited about even today. The Lumia Icon sports the same 2.2GHz quad-core processor as the Lumia 2520 tablet and Lumia 1520 phablets that debuted last year. That’s big since this is the first time such a powerful processor has made it into a more mainstream Windows Phone at the same time as its considered top-of-the-line on other platforms. For comparison, The LG G2 also uses this same Snapdragon 800 processor. In theory, the extra power should allow the Lumia Icon to easily handle whatever apps or resource-hogging games are thrown at it.

Ironically, it’s not that processor that’s drawing the most attention. Nokia has outfitted the Lumia Icon with a 20 megapixel rear-facing camera with its PureView imaging technology and four digital microphones. That PureView camera alone should guarantee higher quality photos than other Lumia flagships like the Lumia 920, Lumia 925 and Lumia 928. That rear-facing camera and those microphone should also allow the Lumia Icon to deliver the best looking and sounding videos of any smartphone too. Users will be able to playback those videos on a 5-inch HD display.

Verizon’s press release also indicates that the Lumia Icon includes wireless charging technology and compatibility with its high-speed 4G LTE data network.

Verizon didn’t indicate how much the Lumia Icon would cost users if they decided to pick up the device as part of the carrier’s Edge upgrade program. Edge allows users to upgrade their device on their own schedule and pay for it over 24 monthly payments.
