Motorola Talks $50 Smartphones, Customizable Screen Sizes
Motorola Talks $50 Smartphones, Customizable Screen Sizes is a post by Cory Gunther from Gotta Be Mobile.
Over the past few months Motorola has shook up the mobile industry more than anyone ever expected. Now that Google’s in charge, we’ve seen a completely different approach from the company, but they’ve only just begun.
From offering customizable smartphones in over 18 different colors, real wood for build materials, and even a premium device for $179 without a contract, not to mention fast updates to Android, this is truly a new Motorola. However, over the next 6-12 months we can expect more awesome things from Motorola, true budget friendly phones, and more customization than ever before. At least that’s what the CEO is saying in a recent interview with TrustedReviews.
The new Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside had a lot to say this week during an interview, many of which are extremely exciting to hear from a smartphone manufacturer. One of the most exciting things was his comments on budget smartphones. $179 for the Moto G without a contract is nice, but in the next year Motorola is aiming at $50 for a smartphone. Now that would be impressive.
Here’s a few quotes by Motorola’s CEO from the interview that were worth mentioning:
“In much of the world $179 is a lot of money so there’s a big market at a price point of less than $179. We’re going to look at that and just delivering on that value promise is super important. I mean why can’t these devices be $50? There’s no reason that can’t happen so we’re going to push that.”
Obviously something that cheap won’t be high end like the iPhone 5s or Galaxy S4, but for emerging markets and first-time smartphone buyers Motorola may be the best choice, if they aren’t already. Then, his next comments regarding customization is pretty refreshing to hear. Motorola’s the only manufacturer letting customers completely choose the colors, accent colors, wallpapers and more before a phone even ships, but they aren’t stopping there.

“On the more premium side we’re pushing more customization. Today you have colours and beginning of materials but you don’t have screen size and you don’t have functionality, and we’re going to bring all that in in the next year or so.”
When it comes to the Moto X you get a premium flagship smartphone that can be customized to your liking from all major US carriers. Having that same idea with more options moving forward in 2014 could be huge. Get a 5-inch Moto X2 or simply a 4.5-inch Moto X2, all based on what the customer wants and needs. That would be impressive, and hopefully that’s exactly what Motorola’s CEO means with these comments.
