Devyani Khobragade: Arrest of Indian diplomat in NYC seen barbaric

Devyani Khobragade, India's deputy consul general in New York has been arrested in New York; She was strip search according to the statement released by the U.S. Marshals Service.

The Indian diplomat was accused of submitting false documents for her Manhattan housekeeper. She was handcuffed and placed inside a cell, together with other defendants.
Meanwhile, the whole arrest process was viewed by India as "despicable and barbaric". Thus, India was ready to retaliate against American diplomats assigned in India.

Marie Harf, State Department deputy spokeswoman told news:

We understand that this is a sensitive issue for many in India

Accordingly, we are looking into the intake procedures surrounding this arrest to ensure that all appropriate procedures were followed and every opportunity for courtesy was extended.

The US call on to India uphold its duties and responsibilities as stipulated in the Vienna Conventions on diplomatic and consular relations.

As a domino effect of what happened in NYC, a diplomatic meeting, which is supposed to take place in India was marred. Indian officials snubbed a scheduled meeting with the visiting US Ambassador Nancy Powell.
